Tables Replace Tradition in School Desks

Rectangles are replacing squares in school desks in today's classrooms, a reflection of the changing styles of education. Visitors to a school of the 2009 era would be surprised at the vast array of desk styles that make its classroom more functional. The connected, structured models that have a dedicated spot for supplies are gone by the wayside. "That is so yesterday,"

Throughout the various grades, school administrators have school desk buying possibilities that include, open front, lift-lid desks and the desks that have the table directly attached to them. Larger students find the combo desk more accommodating because it has a larger surface for the students to do their work on and also provides a larger comfort zone. This new style combo desk has two legs attached to both the desk and chair. It makes it much easier for either a left or right handed student to be comfortable.

With all eyes on more creativity, teachers are starting to have a new approach about what a 'school desk' set up should be. One teacher in California absolutely loves the new style "desks" because they are mobile thus allowing students to move into interactive groups to work. She surmises that the philosophy of sharing with others is the learning styles that mirror the educational learning style these days.

Depending on the need of the assignments and the size of the group, tables are rearranged to form small group. Using tables as desks in this fashion is creating a new learning environment for the children and so far it is having a very positive effect. Pollock, who has been an educator for 35 years, applauds the evolution in classroom furniture. She said they remind her of the little TV trays from the 1950s, without the foil-covered dinners.

Using single tables as desks works better for today's student's lifestyle because of the popularity and functionality of the ubiquitous backpacks. Their popularity is one of the main reasons why traditional school desks have been replaced with school tables. Students tend to learn more by interacting with other students rather than working alone. Tables can be moved easily and this creates change in the classroom.

Pollock points to another more subtle reason why tables instead of school desks are gaining in popularity with teachers. This popularity is based in the reality that the children no longer have a place to hide their chewing gum and those infamous notes that get passed back and forth during class. One of the main culprits that lead to all of this is that backpacks are common and children can now use them to store their books instead of the actual desk. This has alleviated the need for all of this extra storage space that was once considered a necessity in a student's desk. Clever students have to come up with other excuses for leaving their assignments at in their desks.

Neat rows or desks and the philosophy of staying in your seat, have gone the way of the dinosaur. The classroom teachers have done away with the old taboo that desks needed to be arranged in neat little rows. Replacing the standard desk with tables and chairs adds a rather large amount of flexibility in how the teacher can arrange their classroom. Students get up and move around the classroom to work with others throughout the school day, instead of feeling they are "married' to their desk.

The replacement of tables as desks also aids in making things much more comfortable for disabled students and for accommodating and complying with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). If schools are found to be in non-compliance with federal or state rules, they could lose their funding.

Trestle Table Eating in Medieval Design

Early trestle table design was practical in construction and desirable because it was easy to disassemble and transport. It was and still is the perfect occasional table. With it's simple design, those seated do not have the inconvenience of four fixed legs at each corner of the table getting in one's way much like the design of a pedestal table.

During the day the common room or the great hall as they were known was again cleared and used as the Lords deemed fit. As time went on castles became a symbol of power and less as a place of defense and population centers grew also known as cities. Castles and manors were functioning more like homes which needed furniture and craftsmen started to build more ornate pieces. Around the 1500's the trestle table became an important piece of furniture.

Oak Desks For Home Office

In ancient Rome this style was made of stone or marble and was basically a pedestal-style table. By the Middle Ages the trestle table was often a few boards set on top of trestle legs making it collapsible and easily moved or stored.

They were often made of maple, oak or pine. A modern style of the refectory table is know as the extension top or a draw table with leaves that are stored under the top and can be pulled out to extend the ends.

Today the trestle table can be seen in designs of outdoor furniture like picnic tables to handcrafted Amish dining tables. Americana is a well-known and loved traditional Amish style as are Shaker and Arts and Crafts Mission style. Like the table of the Middle Ages, the Mission style is braced together using a stretcher beam and keyed tenon through the center of every trestle.

The Amish create their tables out of native woods like the early Mediterranean and Europeans. They like to use red oak, hickory, quarter-sawn white oak, walnut, cherry and maple. The modern Amish table is very versatile and is well-suited for seating a wide range of styles like formal dining chairs such as a Windsor or Mission slatted back to solid wood benches as were used in the Middle Ages.

Diners from the middle Ages looking for a place to set out the roasted boar and pheasant just laid out a couple of boards across two stands and called it a feast. Today we place a piece of plywood across a couple of sawhorses and call it a picnic. Though this design has taken many forms, some plain, some ornate but it is basically the same design from ancient time.

Trestle designs were used by the military in the field, placed in wagons or used on ships. They were mentioned in writings by Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC has a portrait of one in their collection showing it as one of the earliest examples as an art piece, an important piece of American history.

Writing Desk Overview - Writing Desk History and Uses

The writing desk is a contemporary piece of furniture that can be found in either a home or office setting. Although it was originally designed for the sole purpose of writing letters by hand, its uses have changed quite a bit over time, especially with the advent of the computer. Its history dates as far back as the 17th century, and in those times, the writing desk was known more as a status symbol for the wealthy due to it being expensive, and that most people at that time could not read or write.

Oak Desks For Home Office

Many classical writing desk styles prevailed between the 17th and 20th centuries, such as William and Mary, Queen Anne, Georgian, and Victorian. These styles featured the very best in ornate hand-craftsmanship at that time, such as elaborate wood carving patterns, gilding, dovetailed joints, and cabriole legs that curve outward from the desk on the way down before eventually curving back in and terminating in a ball-and-claw style foot that resembled the paw of an animal. This elaborate architecture helps to explain why it could only be afforded by the wealthy and was initially thought of as more of a status symbol or a decorative piece rather than as a useful piece of furniture. The writing desk produced during this time period featured a flat writing surface about 30 inches high, supported by cabriole, trumpet-turned, or bobbin legs. The horizontal writing surface at the back was supported by a wall that had a number of desktop storage units, also known as pigeonholes, where sensitive documents, writing implements, and other files could be stored. Beneath the writing surface was a set of drawers that spanned the entire width of the desk. Some of these desks came with a roll top or flip-down top that would slide down over the writing surface and pigeonholes and lock in place, protecting sensitive documents and the privacy of the user. It occasionally came with shelving or a hutch at the top, depending on the needs of the consumer of that time. The classical writing desk of this time period was made of wood, chiefly walnut and later mahogany, but writing desks made of oak, pine, and cherry could also be found.

Oak Desks For Home Office

As literacy rates improved, the demand for a more affordable and practical desk increased, especially among the lower and middle classes. This, combined with mass production in the early 20th century, did away with the ornate wood carvings and other signs of ornate craftsmanship, in favor of what could be produced rapidly by steam-powered machinery. From then on, materials other than wood were also used to produce the writing desk, such as laminate, steel, and even glass. At this point, it was much more affordable for the masses.

The advent of the computer brought about even more changes for the writing desk. The horizontal writing surface was made bigger to accommodate a computer monitor. The desk was also built with compartments where printers, scanners, and other computer peripherals could be housed. The pigeonholes were done away with as sensitive documents could now be stored either on the computer, or in file cabinets which often took the place of the drawers that used to span the entire width of the desk. The desire for more affordability and practicality also eliminated the hutch in most cases. Where the classical desks were built as a heavy, one-piece unit, some modern designs were modular and could be taken apart and reassembled as needed.

Although some of the classic writing desk models are hard to find nowadays, there are many reproductions being made and at rather attractive price points. These can make for a very beautiful decorative piece. If you are more into practicality and affordability, a modern desk may be a better alternative. Nowadays, these desks are being made to suit a wide variety of tastes. It will be interesting to see what other changes occur in the future.

Oak Furniture for The Home

Hardwood is gorgeous in the home and perfect for your furniture. It gives style and elegance and it comes from renewable sources. There are many different hardwoods to choose from but the most popular in the UK is oak which has been used for many years because of its beautiful looks, the wonderful properties it possesses to make it a good construction and craft wood, and the fact that it is sourced locally. It resists fungal and insect attack well so it is obvious why oak furniture is so popular.

Oak Desks For Home Office

So what does 'hardwood' mean? The term 'hardwood' doesn't necessarily mean that the wood is hard. Balsa is a hardwood but it is actually softer than the softwoods. There is great variance in the actual hardness of both hardwoods and softwoods. What the term actually means is that the wood comes from trees that reproduce in a certain way. Hardwoods come from angiosperm trees where the seeds have some sort of covering. Oak is a hardwood because the acorns are covered seeds.

Oak Desks For Home Office

The actual hardness of wood is measured on the Janka scale. At the top end of the scale are woods such as Patagonian Rosewood and Brazilian Ebony and at the bottom end you tend to find a lot of the softwoods such as Western Juniper and Eastern White Pine. The scale measures in pounds-force (lbf) and it records the force required to embed a 0.444 inch steel ball into wood to the point where it halves the ball's diameter. Guayacan wood at the very top of the scale is rated at 4500 lbf, and Balsa at the bottom end is rated at 100 lbf.

Oak is available in several different types, each with distinct characteristics. The types are Natural, Tiger, Pippy and Bog. Natural is the most common and is pale brown with normal grain, Tiger is more stripey, Pippy has a cats-paw appearance, and Bog is dark because it has taken on colour from peat bogs. Bog oak is particularly rare so you aren't likely to find much furniture made from it, although it does exist.

When buying oak furniture, make sure that everything is made from solid oak including the bases and backs of drawers because it will last longer. Veneers look pretty good but they don't have the same strength and durability. Handles, knobs and other extras should reflect the quality of the wood and complement the piece. Look for great design and craftsmanship.

There are different styles of oak furniture available, both modern and traditional, but oak crafted to any design looks beautiful and will be a lovely addition to any home.

Office Furniture - Choosing the Best Table for Your Office

Many people work in offices for an average of 8 hours a day, five times a week. Others who have extraordinarily demanding jobs spend about 10-12 hours a day even. This is why many companies today make it a point to have a well-organized office and provide the most suitable office furniture for their employees. Whether they admit it or not, employees are more motivated towards productivity and efficiency when they have a well-planned office space.

Oak Desks For Home Office

Office desks, aside from chairs, are the most used furniture in almost any workplace and come in various designs. To help you choose which style suits your office best, here are the most common ones and their features.

Oak Desks For Home Office

Computer desks can be seen in any office today, obviously because any company uses at least one computer. From banks to broadcasting networks, computer desks are present. Each has the basic structure that provides the right-sized spaces for your CPU, monitor and keyboard. Some styles provide a shelf or platform for your printer and even have a built-in storage space for disks and other computer accessories.

However, an L-shaped desk is, perhaps, the best seller among all office desks. A definite space-saver, an L-shaped desk easily fits a cubicle or an office corner. It normally functions as a computer desk and a table for other paperwork, reading, telephone, and other items and tasks involved in your work. The computer is usually placed on one side while all your storage and writing space are done on the other. A small portable cabinet is usually placed beneath the writing space. For the multi-tasker, this is the suitable multi-functional desk.

Writing desks may be obsolete office furniture for many, but for an office that needs to look good or to interact more with people like a hotel reception or a travel reservation center, they are functional. They are usually built with a drawer or two to store documents. Hotel receptionists and travel reservation agents use them with sleek flat screen PC monitors or notebooks these days.

Ergonomic office furniture, though, is very much in vogue, not because of its looks, but due to its health benefits. For employees who sit for long hours at work, ergonomic desks are built for their modern office. Your PC monitor would be exactly just below eye level and your elbows would always be positioned at a 90-degree angle every time you use your PC.

Finally, executive desks give you a wider desktop to accommodate a PC and all the important papers you need to sign everyday. They also usually have file drawers equipped with locks and are made of fine wood materials. In some companies who value hierarchy and formality, employees who occupy higher positions are usually provided with larger and more elegant desks.

These are just some of the common types of desks you can select from when you shop for office furniture. Choose your desks and other furniture well to create a professional environment that can promote productivity and efficiency in your employees.

Home Office Furniture - Let's Get To Work!

One of the biggest challenges of setting up your home office is choosing the right furniture. You can set up a desk, chair, and everything else you need, and still feel like somethings missing.

Oak Desks For Home Office

With your home office, you need a set-up that is comfortable but also good for getting work done. You'd be amazed the effect little details can have on your motivation. That is why choosing the right home office furniture is so important.

Oak Desks For Home Office

If you can find some discount furniture for your office, you'll save some much needed cash, but don't cut corners. For example, you want office furniture that is functional, but don't get something drab and gray. Remember that the furniture and things that surround you have an influence on how you work. Make sure you're getting the style of furniture that you want.

The Desk - The Home Office Control Station!

Desks come in all shapes and styles, but there is one size you should consider - Big. Saving space is an important consideration for home offices, but you'll need all the desk space you can get.

If you opt for a smaller desk, you might consider getting a work table to use when you need the extra surface space. Even better, some kind of folding table that you can get out when a project demands it.

The most important thing to consider is what you'll be doing at the desk. You definitely want enough space for the computer and computer accessories, but you'll probably want more than that. For instance, you may want room for baskets, shelving, and common tools you'll be using often.

The Chair - Sitting In The Drivers' Seat

Probably the most important consideration for your home office is the chair. You'll log many many hours sitting here. A bad chair will absolutely destroy your neck and back. It will make getting your work done a real physical chore and even a health hazard!

A chair's padding is its most important feature. This is why you should shell out the cash and get a good one. Used chairs often have damage or wear on the padding, so this is probably an area where you'll want to spend some money.

The style of chair depends on what kind of office you want to set up. Most of us would prefer something stylish, sleek and comfortable. You want something comfortable and flexible, that goes up, down, forwards, backwards, and any other way your body might naturally move while you sit.

Bookshelves And Filing Cabinets

Shelves don't have to be for only books. A bookshelf is a good place to put any kind of reference materials or tools that you use on a regular basis. For a bookshelf, you should probably get something big. But, this does not necessarily mean expensive. Remember that material is a big factor in cost. If you want an oak bookshelf from a North Carolina furniture direct dealer, you'll need to spend some bucks for quality. Go with something less expensive, like softwoods or metal, and you'll save some money.

Bookshelves are also a great place to put accessories. You should have some things in your home office that are not office-related. For example, knick knacks, pictures and things you picked up when you were traveling, make good accessories. It's important to decorate your office so that you feel comfortable. Accessories help individualize your office, and give it a personal touch. Just make sure it's not too distracting!

You don't need giant, metal filing cabinets that reach all the way to the ceiling. There are lots of simple and stylish filing systems that you can buy, some that you assemble yourself. Just remember to have enough room for all the paperwork you'll be stuffing in them.

Once you're all set up, it's time to get to work! Buying home office furniture can be fun. Just picture what it will be like when you're all ready to go!
